Rethinking Love and Expectations

TL;DR: We explore the complexity of love, examining the phrase, “It is honourable to fight for someone who loves you; it is a waste of time to fight for someone to love you.” By reflecting on God’s love as described in the Bible, we see that true love is patient, selfless, and rooted in freedom. With examples such as the Prodigal Son, we learn that God’s love is a model of allowing choice, giving without expectation, and remaining open-hearted. Rethinking Love and Expectations The nature of love is complex, and it’s often tempting to view it as an exchange or conquest. The phrase, “It is honourable to fight for someone who loves you; it is a waste of time to fight for someone to love you,” seems to promote reciprocation, but is this the essence of love? The Bible reveals that love is patient and selfless, as seen in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, which describes love as one that “suffereth long” and “seeketh not her own.” God’s love doesn’t depend on human merit; rather, it flows unconditionall...

My Musings: Gladiator (2000) movie

Yesterday, I watched Gladiator, released in 2000, starring Russel Crow , Joaquin Pheonix and Connie Nielson Sad to say it was my first time to watch such an incredible and old movie. The plot was predictable at first when Commodus murdered his father and then the story continues.  You could almost see the evil in Commodus' eyes when he first appeared on the scene. His demeanor, his gait, his stance all reeked of someone who was disturbed. As the movie unfolded, it became clear: he sought a love that was not bestowed upon him as he desired. I know its all a movie and stuff but an important lesson drawn from this is that parental duties comes before all else. Marcus was out winning wars and his son was neglected. Commodus lacked an accessible role male model to look up to guide him in the ways of life. Perhaps he had, but his father could not be replaced. Fathers, be present for your sons.

Ransomware

Ransomware Ransomware has been in the news lately over the past few years. It has been featured in some of my favourite tv show dramas like The Blacklist and more. What is Ransomware? Ransomware is a virus attack of a computer system in which files are encrypted and a ransom demand is displayed. Business houses are the most frequented targets for this viral attack. The simplest form of this attack is just renaming the file extensions and displaying a ransom message for it to be renamed back. The most sophisticated would be locking down the filesystem with encryption and displaying an error message. The most popular ransomware of recent was WannaCry. The exploit was allegedly leaked from the United States National Security Agency. More information about WannaCry can be found here The best defences against ransomware are: User awareness. Informed users decrease the attack surface with which systems can be attacked. File System defences. Volume Shadow Copy and ZFS are the tw...

Intermittent Fasting: My experience

Intermittent fasting has become a topic of interest lately as a result of a push towards healthier lifestyles. In this article, I will briefly discuss what intermittent fasting is, the logic behind it and my personal experiences with this practice. Intermittent fasting is the practice of eating at set intervals of time and fasting the others. The most common practice is to eat within an eight hour window, usually between 10 am and 6 pm, and fast the other sixteen hours. Intermittent fasting does not really suggest which foods to avoid. The restriction is based on time. Therein lies the attraction. Followers can continue to consume their usual foods. I believe the change would be eventual as the choice of foods would gravitate towards a more sustaining type until the fasting window is completed. There also is no restriction for the timing of the fast. It would really depend on each persons preference and lifestyle. The most common windows are: 10 am to 6 pm noon to 8 pm Su...

Life Advice: Successful People Start Before They Feel Ready

Successful People Start Before They Feel Ready by James Clear |  Read this article on JamesClear.com   In 1966, a dyslexic sixteen-year-old boy dropped out of school. With the help of a friend, he started a magazine for students and made money by selling advertisements to local businesses. With only a little bit of money to get started, he ran the operation out of the crypt inside a local church. Four years later, he was looking for ways to grow his small magazine and started selling mail order records to the students who bought the magazine. The records sold well enough that he built his first record store the next year. After two years of selling records, he decided to open his own record label and recording studio. He rented the recording studio out to local artists, including one named Mike Oldfield. In that small recording studio, Oldfield created his hit song, Tubular Bells, which became the record label’s first release. The song went on to sell over 5 mi...

Life Advice: Dealing with Depressed Friends

Everyone gets depressed at times - even our most cheerful friends. I’ve had to deal with depression and many of you had to deal with depression too. I was asked once more to deal depression this morning when one of my dear friends texted me that she was depressed. To help her deal with depression I quickly did the following. To deal with my depressed friend, I had to understand what depression is and what causes depression. The Merriam-Webster’s 11th Collegiate Dictionary defines depression as “a psychoneurotic or psychotic disorder marked especially by sadness, inactivity, difficulty in thinking and concentration, a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping, feelings of dejection and hopelessness, and sometimes suicidal tendencies”. In my own words, I say depression is a condition or phase which people go through during which they feel sad, lose their appetite, feel unmotivated to do anything and/or show other signs that they are down. Depression is som...
