My Musings: Gladiator (2000) movie

Yesterday, I watched Gladiator, released in 2000, starring Russel Crow , Joaquin Pheonix and Connie Nielson Sad to say it was my first time to watch such an incredible and old movie. The plot was predictable at first when Commodus murdered his father and then the story continues.  You could almost see the evil in Commodus' eyes when he first appeared on the scene. His demeanor, his gait, his stance all reeked of someone who was disturbed. As the movie unfolded, it became clear: he sought a love that was not bestowed upon him as he desired. I know its all a movie and stuff but an important lesson drawn from this is that parental duties comes before all else. Marcus was out winning wars and his son was neglected. Commodus lacked an accessible role male model to look up to guide him in the ways of life. Perhaps he had, but his father could not be replaced. Fathers, be present for your sons.

Robocopy

I recently became fascinated with a tool called Robocopy. It is a command-line utility for copying files/folders that is very robust. The name in itself is Rob ust Copy. Now for those of you SysAdmin guys, you would know how to use a command-line/terminal window. But for you average dudes and dudettes, this might be a bit tricky. Not difficult, just different 😃 Now this utility can copy files especially in Windows, with a lot more information than just the file data. It can copy files/directories: over a network with resume capabilities. Useful if you have remote file servers. preserving date and time stamps. Amazing for backups. It even has a backup switch that extends this capability 😮 and skipped already copied files/directories and more Like all command line utilities, you can get more information about the usage by typing robocopy /? into the command-line. Here is a great guide for your reading .

Tips: Stall Ticketing System

In Papua New Guinea, we have Cultural Shows with celebrating our unity in our diversity. At these cultural shows, individuals and organizations set up stalls in the show grounds. For the organisers, there is a problem that is always faced. And that is how to give stall passes and keep track of them. Last year at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology Cultural Show and 39th Independence Anniversary Celebrations, the organizing committee faced the same problem. How could we make sure that one stall pass was not used for multiple entries? Stall passes are needed to maintain the stalls so they need to: Have unlimited entries; and  Be valid for the duration of the show Problem Certain people use the stall pass for multiple entries. After the stall keepers have used the pass for entry, it is passed to others to enter the show arena without paying. Solution To prevent this from happening, two sets of stall passes were used. Stall entry pass Stall exit pass ...

SParKY’s Tips: Studying for Exams

Studying for exams has proven to be nerve-wrecking for me. Yet I have studied for and successfully passed many of my exams. How did I do that? After failing some exams too, I now have a clearer perspective of “studying for exams”. I have compiled a list of study techniques which when I did use, I did well in my exams. Review Complete all exercises Read extensively to get the bigger picture Write down your own summary notes 1. Review I used to think that studying was reviewing before the test or exam. However, I realised I was cramming. I couldn’t remember what I crammed after the exam. This made me realise, what is the use of cramming if I cannot remember in the long run what I crammed. I will be needing this information on the go, not referring to textbooks every now and then just because I cannot remember a concept that I was supposed to have mastered. It would be a disgrace that I am called a degree holder. I remember one of my Lecturers, Dr. Augustine Moshi saying, “If yo...
